Serious Champaign Auto Accidents
Champaign has seen its fair share of serious auto collisions and residents are at a greater risk due to its position near several major interstates and state routes. Over the last year alone, numerous fatalities have sparked concern among many drivers who rely on these major thoroughfares on a daily basis. One near fatal accident occurred in July when a semi-tractor driver collided with a vehicle carrying two teenagers at the busy intersection of Prospect Avenue and Bloomington Road. The force of the impact was so severe that firefighters needed to extract the two teenagers from their vehicle.
Later in October of 2015, a 20 year old journalism student attending the University of Illinois was killed in a head-on collision on Illinois Route 47. He was driving with two passengers, both of which were treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. It was determined that he veered into the oncoming lane for reasons authorities were unable to determine prior to the collision.
2016 got off to an injurious start when three collisions were reported on I-72 in the same day, resulting in serious injuries to those involved. Distracted driving was the determined factor in the first of the collisions, which was a head-on collision resulting from the at fault driver crossing into the opposing lane. A second accident resulted from the backed up traffic caused by the first when a driver rear ended another who was slowing down in response to the traffic congestion. This incident resulted in serious injuries to two people, but they were soon reported to be in stable condition after being taken to Carle Hospital.
Causes of Traffic Crashes Resulting in Champaign Accidents
Our Champaign auto injury lawyers cannot stress how important it is for drivers to limit distractions whenever they are behind the wheel. Studies have proven that driver distraction is to blame for the majority of accidents today and some form of driver negligence is to blame for nine out of ten accidents. In addition to distracted driving, here are some of the other causes of auto collisions.
- Sleep deprivation or driver fatigue. Champaign is located along major truck routes that serve millions of commercial trucks every year. These drivers often work beyond their allowable hours of service in order to meet tight deadlines. When they are not well rested, their reflexes and reaction time are impacted in a manner similar to intoxication, which can make them more prone to cause an accident.
- Excessive speeds. It has been shown that speed isn’t only a factor in accident severity, but that it can increase the likelihood of accidents when drivers exceed posted speed limits or drive too fast for road conditions. This is exacerbated when they follow too closely because it limits the time they have to react when the vehicle ahead needs to slow down or come to a stop.
- Alcohol and drugs. Intoxicated driving continues to be one of the leading cause of traffic fatalities. While there are fewer accidents involving drunken drivers, these accidents are more likely to result in debilitating or life-threatening injuries.
- Adverse weather and road conditions. Poor road conditions can damage vehicles and cause motorists to lose control of their vehicles while the weather can create unsafe conditions by increasing stopping distance and limiting visibility. Glare is also the cause of many accidents because drivers are often unable to see what is directly in front of their vehicles and may run traffic lights or collide with a vehicle that is slowing or stopped.
